Health Savings Account (HSA)

Health Savings Account (HSA)Health Savings Account (HSA)Health care is an important part of an employee benefits package, albeit an expensive one. With health care costs rising, businesses are looking for alternatives to the customary managed care plans. One of the options available is a Health Savings Account (HSA). What is an HSA? An HSA is a type of consumer-driven health care account. HSAs are a type of account that allows individuals to save for qualified medical expenses tax-free. They were modeled after Archer MSAs, brought about when President Bush signed in the Medicare Modernization Act in 2003. HSAs are open to anyone who is enrolled in a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Account funds are contributed into the account tax-free. Money in the HSA is allowed to accumulate in the account and earn interest. When the account holder has a qualified medical expense, that person would withdraw the money tax-free for those expenses. Some types of qualified medical ex penses include deductibles, co-insurance costs, and copays. The money stays in the account from year to year and just keeps rolling over. HSAs are owned by the individual, not by employers. Any money contributed into the account, whether by employer or employee, is the employees to use for their qualified medical expenses. Who is Eligible for an HSA? Employers who wish to platzdeckchen up an HSA for their employees must also enroll their employees in anHDHP. To qualify for an HSA, employees Must have coverage through an HDHPNot have coverage through any other health insuranceNot have coverage through MedicareCannot be claimed as a dependent on anyones tax return Anyone can qualify for an HSA regardless of income. There are no income tiefpunkts or maximums to sign up for an HSA. Who is Not Eligible for an HSA? Employees that have any of the following cannot sign up for an HSA. MedicareTricareFlexible Spending Account (FSA)Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) There are some exce ptions. Employees can have an HSA with an HRA or FSA under certain conditions. If the HRA and FSA are used only for vision, dental or preventive care benefits and not for medical benefits, its fine to use either alongside an HSA.HRAs and FSAs can be used for medical accounts ONLY after the minimum annual deductible has been met for the HDHP.An HRA that is set up to fund health care costs after retirement can be used along with an existing HSA.If an existing HRA is already established and an employeeagrees to forgo health care reimbursements during the period when theres a contribution to their HSA, both would be allowed to exist at once. Who Can Contribute to the HSA? HSA contributions can be made by the employer, employee, or through a shared contribution through both parties. A contribution can also be made by a third party on behalf of the employee. Employees can also make a one-time transfer from their IRA to their HSA. Anyone that is self-employed, a partner or S-Corporati on share are not considered employees of a company and cannot receive an employer contribution. They may open up an HSA, but it would have to be self-funded. If an employer contributes to the HSA, they can do it in a couple of ways Contributions can be made through salary reductions through a cafeteria section 125 plan on a pre-tax basis. An employer can automatically make contributions through a cafeteria plan on behalf of the employee. Certain rules do apply, though. If the employer makes the contribution or any portion of the contribution to the HSA, then that portion is not taxable to the employee as income or wages. Additionally, contributions must stop once an individual is enrolled in any type of Medicare plan. Remember that once money is contributed by an employer into an employees account, any money is deemed the employees, even if they leave the company on a voluntary or involuntary basis. The individual owns the account and decides how the money is allocated to medical exp enses and invested, while employed with the company, and once the individual no longer works for the company. Can the Money in the HSA be Used for Anything Else? The amount contributed to the HSA must be used for qualified expenses related to the HDHP. Receipts for expenses should be kept in a safe place. If an employee must withdraw HSA money, it is similar to the penalties for withdrawing from an IRA before its time limit. The withdrawn amount is subject to income tax, plus a 10% penalty. Compare an FSA with an HSA. HSA and HDHP Contribution Limits The following amounts are adjusted for inflation annually. HDHP minimum deductible2019$1,100 (individual coverage)$2,700 (family coverage) HDHP annual out-of-pocket (including deductibles and co-pays) cannot exceed2019$6,750 (individual coverage)$13,500 (family coverage) HSA Maximum Contribution Amount2019$3,500 (individual coverage)$7,000 (family coverage) Catch-Up Contributions (age 55 or older)2019$1,000 Any contribution made to an HSA that is in excess of the maximum contribution level must be withdrawn, otherwise, it is subject to an excise tax. If the HSA amount for the year was not reached, there are no penalties. All contributions are pro-rated for the year based on how many months the employee is in the plan.

Avoid Joining the Mass Depression

Avoid Joining the Mass DepressionAvoid Joining the Mass DepressionExcerpted from Youre Better Than Your Job SearchBy Marc Cenedella and Matthew RothenbergCoping with the feelings that go along with a job loss is challenging under any circumstances, but job seekers find themselves dealing with negative group-think and perhaps even a mass depression.Kathryn J. Fraser, a psychiatrist and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, takes the notion a step further, saying that too much exposure to television and the Internet - regardless of the program - can have mental as well as physical consequences.I think its important that people limit their time watching the TV, she says. There are actual studies that show that too much TV goes along with increased depression. And part of it is, physically, people are just sitting there, watching something, and our bodies were not meant to do that. Again, back to evolutionary psychology, we need to be running around and doing physical exercise. In fact, experts tell Ladders time and again that regular exercise and eating right are key to maintaining the healthy mind and body that will be required for an arduous job search. We all sweat from anxiety, says Elizabeth Friedman, a clinical psychologist in New York. It is way better to sweat from a good workout. There is all kinds of evidence that exercise releases all kinds of good stuff in your brain and makes you more positive.Indeed, people will have to work hard to overcome the repeated rejection that can come with an extended job search. The mind has to change to the concept of, Its going to take me a while to find a job, says Kevin Skinner, a marriage and family therapist who also shares his expert advice at MyExpertSolution.com.Think, Its not a matter of if, but a matter of when I get that new job. And until then, Im going to be hitting up against a lot of rejection. And we dont deal with rejection very well as huma n beings, especially when it has to do with our finances and being able to provide for our families.Michael Jolkovski, Ph.D., a psychologist and psychoanalyst in Falls Church, Va., agrees. Its sort of like the entrepreneurs mentality, where people are doing something and the success is uncertain, he says. Just like certain salespeople - if they get a 1 percent response rate, then theyre doing well. They have to have the mentality to make 99 calls and say, Well, theres one more down, instead of saying, Oh, Ive been rejected 99 times. Become Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home Mom

Become Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home MomBecome Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home MomWhen you become a stay-at-home parent, you ultimately give up a wide variety of things, and one of the things that you may no longer have is financial independence. Many parents who choose to stay home have a spouse or partner who is financially stable and willing to make the necessary financial sacrifices for a single-income family. Sooner or later, though, there will come a time when you begin to miss and even crave that independence you lost when you became a stay-at-home parent. Address the Issue of Why You Need to Be Financially Independent When you decide that you need to be financially independent, it is important to address the issues that are causing you to feel that way. If one parent is staying at home, it will only work if everything becomes ours and you work as a team. A yours and mine attitude will not work in a relationship where one partner is dependent on the o ther for daily expenses and expenditures. Some stay-at-home parents find themselves in a situation where the other partner becomes controlling and closely monitors the spending, which makes it difficult to find money to buy things for themselves or others in the family without the approval of the other spouse. If this is the case, you may want to set up a category where you each get money that you can spend without being accountable to the other partner each month. If its proving difficult to come to an agreement on this matter, it also may be a signal that it is time to get some outside counseling help for the relationship. Another reason is that the stay-at-home parent or their partner may feel that they are no longer contributing to the well-being of the family. Often, stay-at-home parents can save a significant amount of money in childcare costs and other ways through using couponsand cooking at home. Though youre not specifically earning an income, this is totenstill ultimately contributing to the financial well-being of the family since it saves the family money overall. If this feeling exists, it is important to sit down and talk it through. Create a budget for both scenarios and determine which option is best for your family as a whole. Look for Work at Home Options If you want to become financially independent, you will need to find a way to generate income. There are many options that allow you to be at home with your children, but still bring in income to support your family. These options are not always easy and you will often need the support of your spouse or partner to make them work, but they can help you become financially independent. Start an At-Home Business One option is to start a business that you can work on from your home. This may be watching other children or it could be a service that you can provide others from your home. For example, some hairdressers will convert a garage or basement to a salon and offer services from th eir home around their childrens schedules. You could also restore furniture for people or offer catering or cooking services for families that do not have time to cook. Make Money With the Internet Another option is to find a business or job that you can do online. For example, you can open an Etsy store and sell items that you make online. You could also use eBay to sell items that you find. Another option is to build a specialty website where you sell items that you purchase at a discount. There is also the possibility of blogging or vlogging and monetizing it to make money. Many of these projects can be done during your childrens downtime and work into a decent revenue stream over time. Find a Work-at-Home Job There are a number of jobs that you can do online from freelance writing to answering phone calls to data entry. The key is to look for legitimate opportunities and companies that you can trust. Some call center jobs will train you locally at a center and then allow you to work from home. Depending on your line of work, you may be able to transition your office job into one that you do primarily from home. There are online only teachers and professors as well as accountants and other jobs. You can work evenings or nights and still focus on your children during the day.

Farewell to The Office 4 Harsh Realities for the Comedic Workplace - Spark Hire

Farewell to The Office 4 Harsh Realities for the Comedic Workplace - Spark HireWell, its official everyones favorite workplace comedy has come to an end. While The Office is just a show, the reality is that the ending weve seen would have never come to fruition had this been an actual workplace. Plenty of lines have been crossed over the years on the show, and its worth taking a look at how things would have been different on The Office if it were more like your office.Office romances.Pam and Jim. Dwight and Angela. Andy and Angela. Kelly and Ryan. Erin and Pete. Michael and Holly. The list goes on and on no really, it does. Had this been an actual workplace, these couples would have had to sign a relationship disclosure agreement, giving them plenty of time and red tape to decide if this relationship welches really worth pursuing. If they had been able to date at all. Many workplaces have a strict no-dating policy amongst co-workers, which helps the company avoid getting caught up in any legal or liability issues if things turn sour. In this case, Michael Scott would still be acting manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. And everyone would have most likely lost interest in the show because who doesnt love a good romance?Professional vs. personal.Ok, we take that back. Michael Scott would have beenfired a long time ago. Remember Diversity Day? Or when Michael fake fires Pam in the very first episode? And dont forget the many, many, many instances of sexual harassment that Michael Scott instigated throughout his time on the show. The long and short of it is that Michael Scott would have been a huge liability to the company and let go long before he was able to do any more damage. Who would have taken Michaels role as Manager? Most likely someone outside of the office and this is why.Dwight shot a firearm in the office the one day he was acting Manager. And thatpretty much sums up that.Work productivity and performance.Lets be honest here. The Scranton b ranchwas one of the worst examples of workplace productivity and high performance output. You could probably count on two hands the amount of sales calls we actually saw over the years. What we did see were the office Olympics, countless unproductive conference meetings and many, many in-office parties. Its difficult to believe that any work was getting done and with that, The Office, as we know we it, would have ceased to exist long ago.List off some more harsh realities for the comedic workplace in the comments belowIMAGE Courtesy of Flickr byRandy Son Of Robert

4 Factors to Measure Your Online Reputation

4 Factors to Measure Your Online Reputation4 Factors to Measure Your Online ReputationRecruiters and hiring managers use four dimensions to evaluate the people they Google.Theres no debating it, your online reputation will impact your ability to get a job. The facts83 percent of hiring managers and recruiters research candidates online. Execunet, 2007 70 percent of recruiters have eliminated candidates based on infassonation they found online. Microsoft 2009 - US, UK, France, GermanyNot long ago, when someone Googled you, they were making a decision about you based on two factors volume and relevance. Volume speaks to how much content there is on the Web about you - the more there is, the more people believe you have something to say. Relevance speaks to how consistent the content is with who you say you are. It answers the question, is this partie relevant and compelling? When we designed the Online ID Calculator, we built an algorithm that measures these two important factors of online reputation. Nearly 60,000 people have used the calculator to measure their volume and relevance of results and see where they show up in a four-box model.Recently, however, thanks to changes in how Google displays results, the huge rush of people to get their brands online and the way we search for people on the Web, we identified two additional factors that searchers use to evaluate the people they Google. Those factors are purity and diversity.Purity Now that almost everyone has jumped on the Web, there is a lot of noise. There was a time when you Googled me - William Arruda - and the only results were about me. I am fortunate to have a fairly unique name. (Thanks, Dad) But now, a Google search reveals that there is a bodybuilder, a cop and a teacher who share my unique name. You have likely seen the same when you Google yourself. This creates confusion for those who want to learn about you - making it hard for them to discern what content they should associate with you .Diversity The diversity measure acknowledges the evolution from text-only searches to blended search. You have likely noticed when you perform a Google search that the results include the standard written content (links to blogs and Web sites and articles, for instance) along with images, video and real-time content. No longer is it enough to comment on a few blog posts, build your LinkedIn profile and publish an article to a relevant Web portal. Today, you need to ensure that that your Web content is diverse - that it includes multimedia items and your recent Twitter posts. The next time you Google yourself, look holistically at these four measures - volume, relevance, purity and diversity - and ask yourself, What perceptions would searchers form from reading my Google results?Once you are clear about your personal brand, here are three steps to enhance your online reputationStep 1. Understand your digital brand. You can use tools like Google, Truveo and Addictomatic, and online ID Calculator, to understand how you measure up in the four dimensions of online branding.Step 2. Determine which of the four measures - volume, relevance, diversity or purity - needs the greatest attention (you may have a couple that could use some work).Step 3. Depending on which areas need the most attention, apply the tips belowVolume enhancers If you need more results that are about you, set up social networking profiles on many sites by editing your current branded bio and establishing accounts at naymz, ziki, ziggs and other sites.Relevance enhancers To enhance relevance, where possible, remove content that is unflattering or inconsistent with how you want to be known, write an article about your area of expertise and post it to an appropriate online portal. Find blogs related to your area of thought-leadership, subscribe and comment when you have something valuable to contribute. Review books related to your area of expertise at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Publish relevant white papers to SCRIBD.com. To learn how to turn one real-world communications activity into a years worth of online content, check out this video http//bit.ly/realvirtual.Purity enhancers Sign up for an account at Vizibility. The service allows you to identify the Google results that are about you and create a Search Me button that you can include in your elektronischer brief signature, your LinkedIn profile, on your blog, etc.Diversity enhancers Sign up for a Flickr account and post relevant images. If you dont already have one, set up your Google profile.Soon, you should be on your way to the volume, relevance, purity and diversity that will improve your ability to get a job.
